Membership Support / Advice

Currently the LWA does not have capacity or resources to help individual members or potential members on their specific projects, farms or programmes. We are looking for an enthusiastic grower to join the farm from March 2020 until the end of the season. There is potential for the right candidate to extend their contract into the next year. This job comes with some responsibility and lots of opportunity to learn about many areas of the farm, including the cultivation of organic vegetables, tractor working and market selling. This is a great opportunity for someone who has worked as a farm labourer, or has done a traineeship and wants to gain experience working as a full time grower.

Blacklands Organics is a 10 acre organic veg farm in South Oxfordshire. We sell via a market in Oxford, wholesale to order and an honesty box shop and have expanded from 2 acres to the present 10 acres in 3 years. We grow a very large range of veg on field scale, a 1 acre market garden and in 12 polytunnels. Employment is offered with a fixed term contract until November 2020. Free veg from the farm is included in your contract, as is sick and holiday pay.

Working with the team at Blacklands; who are head grower Jamie Carr, our assistant grower and part time and seasonal workers, you will be involved in all areas of veg production. This will include propagation, weeding, harvesting, stocking the honesty box shop, packing orders and farm maintenance. This role also includes occasional weekend markets, the successful candidate will be able to commit some (about 4/year) Saturdays to help with the market and eventually, with training, be able to do them independently. Training can also be provided for tractor driving, at Blacklands we expect all team members to have the ability to do basic tractor tasks, pulling a trailer, taking on and off kit etc. Driving the van is also a requirement.

This is a wonderful opportunity to join a young and enthusiastic team and a chance to hone your skills in growing organic produce. During your time at Blacklands you will work hard but you will also gain skills, experience and confidence.

    Requirements
    Essential
At least 1 season paid work on an organic veg farm (not only volunteering)
    Full UK driving licence
An interest in organic principles, food and farming
    Enthusiasm and good communication
    Desired
Two or more full years working on organic veg farms
    Experience with Polytunnel growing
    Tractor driving
    Farmers market experience

Salary: 19k depending on experience (40hr/wk)
Hours per week will vary throughout the year depending on the season. 28 days annual leave provided.

Open for application until 09/02/20 with interviews happening shortly after
To apply please send a copy of your CV and a covering letter to mary2carr@gmail.com
