Membership Support / Advice

Currently the LWA does not have capacity or resources to help individual members or potential members on their specific projects, farms or programmes. Cultivating Wisdom: Celebrating Farmer-Led Research and Innovation

Cultivating Wisdom: Celebrating Farmer-Led Research and Innovation
02/01/2025 Yali Banton Heath

We are delighted to announce the release of ‘Cultivating Wisdom’, a groundbreaking collection of research summaries from the Landworkers’ Alliance’s ‘Experts in Your Field‘ project. This publication represents two years of innovative, farmer-led research that’s transforming our understanding of agroecology in the UK.

by Dr Isobel Talks (Project Officer for Experts in Your Field)

As the Community Research Facilitator for this UKRI-funded initiative, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing first-hand how small-scale farmers and landworkers are leading innovation in agroecological farming and land work. For too long, their expertise has gone unrecognised by formal research institutions. ‘Cultivating Wisdom’ changes this narrative.

The book showcases research findings from our diverse network of participants who, despite the demands of the growing season, designed and implemented trials on their own farms. Over 75 landworkers engaged in Phase Two of the Experts In Your Field project, with 40 going on to carry out research projects covering various aspects of agroecology. Their work spans crucial areas including biodiversity, soil health and social aspects of agroecology.

What makes this publication unique is its ground-up approach. Every study represents real-world applications and innovations emerging directly from working farms and woodlands. It demonstrates how properly valuing farmers’, growers’ and other practitioners time and knowledge, with some equipment and financial support, enables community-based expertise to flourish.

The peer-to-peer network that emerged through this project has been remarkable. Participants have shared insights, overcome challenges together, and built a supportive community that extends beyond individual farms. This collaborative spirit is evident throughout the book’s pages.

‘Cultivating Wisdom’ isn’t just a collection of research summaries – it’s a powerful tool for change. The findings presented here provide vital evidence to support policy development and showcase the crucial role of agroecology in building a more sustainable food system. This publication marks a significant milestone in recognising and elevating the expertise that exists in our fields and woodlands. The research documented here will inform policymakers, research institutions, and fellow practitioners about the value of agroecological approaches and farmer-led innovation.

Together, we’re cultivating not just crops and livestock, but a new way of valuing and sharing agricultural knowledge. Join us in celebrating this important milestone in farmer-led research and innovation.
