English What was it all about?
In 2018 the Landworkers’ Alliance worked with a number of allied organisations to hold the UK’s first Good Food, Good Farming march, an event that brought together 500 people in London on World Food Day.
The march took inspiration from the German march that began in 2012 with a handful of people and a couple of tractors, but which now attracts 35,000 people and a caravan of 150 tractors.
Why did we march?
We all have a right to good food – it’s a basic human right! To realise this right we need to ensure farmers are able to produce nutritious ecological, healthy food and everybody has guaranteed access to it.
Anyone who grows, produces, distributes, prepares or eats food – together all of us have a stake in the food system. Whether you are worker in the food system, a farmer, a grower, parents wanting affordable, nutritious food for your children, or you want to support farming that produces good food and works in harmony with the earth, it is critical that we come together to create a shared voice.
The march called for:
- Communities to have access to local, affordable, healthy food
- Support for ecological farming and a new generation of farmers
- Fair prices for farmers
- High animal welfare standards
- Ending the use of pesticides and herbicides.
