“No-till” is one of those buzz words in farming – there’s a lot of people switching to this method. To learn more, we asked experience grower and LWA Coordinating Group Member Ruth Hancock to (no) dig into Bryan O’Hara’s new book.
In his “No-till Intensive Vegetable Culture” Bryan O’Hara takes us on a highly informative and very readable exploration of holistic growing for good soil and great crops.
Written by someone with a wealth of hands-on experience, this book is realistic and open about the trials, as well as the tribulations of feeding people well, from a productive and healthy growing system.
He details what he has learnt along the way, and how methods have been changed and adapted over the years. There are established ideas re-examined in a fresh light, and plenty of inspiration to keep on exploring.
As a fellow grower who has been doing this for over twenty years, I still picked up some useful practical tips. Whether a beginner in the production game, or a more experienced hand, there is something here for anyone interested in nutritious food.
There’s plenty of technical, and scientific knowledge to really get the basics on soil nutrients, plant health, rotations, and harvest techniques, alongside a real feeling of dedication to, and love for, the craft of food growing overall.
And most importantly Bryan also gives due consideration to the contribution and care of the people who are a vital part of any beneficial growing system.
No-Till Intensive Vegetable Culture is out now. Where possible please buy from your local independent bookshop or buy from this link where 10% of the price goes to support a local bookshop and 10% goes to the LWA.
