What’s the issue?
Sourcing organic UK-grown feed is currently a huge challenge facing small-scale poultry producers in Scotland and the rest of the UK. Soaring feed prices throughout 2022 as a result in the rise of energy costs, combined with international supply chain volatility and corporate control of the animal feed sector has meant that many small-scale poultry producers face uncertainty about the viability of their businesses.
What are we doing?
The LWA’s Pastured Poultry Feed Project in Scotland bringing together small-scale poultry farmers who are hoping to tackle the huge challenge of sourcing organic UK-grown poultry feed. The aims of the group include sharing knowledge of pastured poultry practices, researching locally grown feed sources and exploring collective purchasing models.
This project is part of a wider programme in partnership with other organisations in Scotland to embed and support the transition to agroecology through a practical knowledge exchange programme funded by the Scottish Government’s Knowledge Transfer Innovation Fund (KTIF).
