We are currently not recruiting for any roles but please read our newsletters for any announcements. We currently do not offer any volunteer or internship placements directly with the LWA, but keep an eye out in the newsletter or on the forum for any members looking for volunteers or workers.

Membership Support / Advice

Currently the LWA does not have capacity or resources to help individual members or potential members on their specific projects, farms or programmes. We get a lot of requests for individual support and would love to have the time to respond to each request in full. We are fundraising for a new role for somebody to focus on membership support and services as we have identified it is a gap in our offering so please watch this space. Having said that, if your query is critical and urgent please email info@landworkersalliance.org.uk including the word URGENT in the subject header and it will get picked up and we can try our best to help.

    Farming opportunity
    North Lancashire
    I have a small farm Backsbottom Farm with 25ha inbye land all herb rich grassland including around 3ha of apple orchards with around 200 different varieties, around 4ha with potential for hay making and a forest garden in the beautiful valley of Roeburndale. The upper part of the farm includes 25 ha moorland with heather, bilberry, cotton grass, sphagnum partly restored blanket bog.
    There are a few basic timber buildings.
    I am currently turning most of the apples into cider and then into hopefully a premium cider vinegar matured in oak whiskey barrels. The farm has a small flock of around 50 sheep, mainly Cheviot x Lleyn but now put to a Ryeland tupp. Originally there was a farmhouse and stone buildings by the river that were washed away in 1967. At that time the farm had 12 dairy cows and around 80 dalesbred sheep.
    On the farm we also have a small study centre run by Anthony Bilton from the Middle Wood Trust. Anthony is living in an octagonal log cabin.
    Surrounding the farm there is 50 ha of ancient semi natural woodland that our yurt resident Rog Burnett is starting to manage.
    The emphasis on the farm has been to explore permaculture and prioritise wildlife. The farm is a permaculture LAND site.
    I am now ready to hand over the main farming enterprise to a young enthusiastic couple or similar as I am approaching retirement. Currently I feel that more mixed livestock (mob grazing) would be a great benefit to the farm and there is great potential for diversity of products from the farm and an opportunity to run courses if you wanted. The people taking over the farm will need reasonable financial resources to make it work well.
    My dream would be that the farm becomes a good example of regenerative resilient farming. I feel that the enthusiasm and direction of the LWA fits in well with the farm potential. There is a very enthusiastic Food Futures for North Lancashire project based in Lancaster 12 miles away and we are aiming to run the Northern Real Farming Conference at the end of Sept.
    Currently I am working on Natural Flood Management on the farm and with neighbours up the valley and Backsbottom Farm will become a demonstration NFM site.
    There is an old caravan and a potential yurt site in the forest garden. My wife, Jane and I will continue to live in the house and I will help out on the farm and in the woodlands at times.
