The Northern Ireland branch of the LWA has been active since 2022, when a few members decided to start organising events and building connections. The LWA NI has become a hub for people passionate about agroecology to share knowledge and experiences, support each other, and mobilise around campaigns and projects. Members communicate through an active whatsapp group, an e-newsletter and in person gatherings, and organise a presence at wider demos, conferences and events.
LWA members in Northern Ireland are particularly passionate about increased support for new starters and have been calling on the government to prove grants for training new entrants, small grants for small machinery (including second hand equipment), and improved access to land for growing. They’re also calling for decreasing the land requirement for farm subsidies, and measuring environmental and social impact of businesses (such as soil health and community building) rather than outputs..
If you want to get involved in this growing network of groups and individuals taking action on issues that affect them, sign up as a member or supporter of the LWA and get in touch with the member organising team on n.ireland@landworkersalliance.org.uk or natalia.szarek@landworkersalliance.org.uk to find out more!
