Our latest report The Cutting Edge: Twelve Examples of Ecological Forestry in the UK proves that viable and thriving ecological forestry and woodland businesses do exist in the UK, but that there remain significant barriers to expanding the sector .
LWA Forestry have now published a report showcasing twelve examples of ecological forestry and woodland business across the UK in Scotland, Wales and England.
The report provides evidence and case studies to prove that small-medium scale ecological and regenerative forestry enterprises in the UK are not only economically viable but that they are providing important employment opportunities, are benefitting and engaging with local communities, and are providing numerous benefits to forest ecosystems and wildlife habitats.
The report includes a breakdown of size, company type, average annual turnover and main costs for each case study, as well as an overview of some of the main opportunities and barriers faced by each enterprise.
It then goes on to draw some common themes that emerge from the case studies, including the benefits of an integrated approach to forestry, woodland management and conservation, the importance of firewood, and the need to consider global supply timber chains and the need to improve the UK’s domestic supply.
The report then summarises some of the key barriers faced by ecological forestry businesses, namely: access to affordable housing, grants and funding, and the rising cost of land. It then concludes with a list of broad policy recommendations for the UK government and devolved administrations.
